A Yale Summer

Surrounded by an international community of students and staff, your days will be filled with new ideas, interests, and opinions — expanding your understanding of the world, and encouraging you to rethink your place in it.

A Global Community

Living in a global community rich with new ideas, interests, and opinions will challenge your conception of the world and your place in it. You might debate trading sanctions with individuals from different countries — and with very different ideas — and live with roommates who have vastly disparate religious views. At EXPLO at Yale, this is our "normal" — in no time at all, it will become yours, too.

Life on Campus
From choosing the subjects you’ll explore to which of the three dining halls you’ll try for lunch, you have the chance to design your days to look just how you want them — and the opportunity to explore every facet of campus life. You’ll visit friends in the dorms and student lounges, take classes all over campus, and find out what it means to get breakfast, get to class, and get your laundry done, all without missing a beat.

Best of all, you’ll have the chance to experience the independence that comes with spending your days (and nights) away from home — knowing that if there’s ever anything you need, every staff member on campus is there to make sure you feel safe, secure, and most of all, at home.

New Friends, New Experiences
Every day at EXPLO, you’ll be experiencing something new — including meeting all the new people around you. With students from all over the world living just down the hall (and in your courses, workshops, and activities), you’ll have a chance to get to know people with customs, beliefs, and views that might be really different from your own. But the most time you spend getting to know them? You’ll find you’re not so different after all.

Living Groups
Your new roommate could be from New York, California, France, or Japan, and could easily become your new best friend on campus. You’ll both be part of a Living Group of approximately 16 students, led by two Residential Advisors who live on your floor, check on you throughout your day, and keep you informed of what’s going on around campus. Consider this your campus family — they’ll care for you as if you were their own.

Suite Structure
The suite structure in the residence halls of the Old Campus provides an ideal pre-college living experience. Each building has its own history and unique character. As a residential student, you will be housed with up to 8 other students in a suite, each with a mix of single and double bedrooms and a furnished common room. Three or four suites together make up a Living Group, each with two Residential Advisors (RAs). All dorms are single-sex. Each Living Group has a furnished student lounge, which serves as a place for daily check-ins and socializing.

The majority of our students come to EXPLO at Yale without knowing other students, so your suitemates and Living Group tend to be the people with whom you make your first friendships. You are assigned housing based on your answers to our housing questionnaire. Knowing your music preferences and sleeping habits helps us match students and create cohesive living groups. Staff Support
Our staff’s main priority has always been one thing, and one thing only: you. Staff members, faculty, and administrators are there to help instruct and guide you through your summer experience. Our job is to (gently) nudge you beyond your comfort zone, making sure you get to experience all an EXPLO summer has to offer while feeling as safe and secure as possible in the process. And since we’re as excited to be at EXPLO as you’ll be (once you get here), we’ll make sure every experience is as fun and fulfilling as can be.
