Arrival + Departure Information

Below are details about our Arrival and Departure procedures. If you have any questions, please contact our Admissions Office.

EXPLO knows that flights can be delayed. That's why on opening day we keep staff at Bradley International Airport until we've picked up all students who have scheduled flights during our regular pick up times — even if those flights are very late.

When going home, we stay at the Bradley International Airport until all student flights are in the air. We know you would not take chances with your children, and neither will we.

Residential Arrival Information

Registration for residential students begins at 1:00pm. Students should arrive between 1:00pm and 5:00pm. There will be an assortment of staff-led activities going on at the program throughout the afternoon, including campus tours.

Families should feel free to join students on a campus tour and help them get moved into their suites. There will be optional meetings for parents/guardians with the Dean of Students on Arrival Day. For students arriving alone, EXPLO staff will be available to answer their questions and help them get settled.

PLEASE NOTE: We cannot accommodate early arrivals. EXPLO is not responsible for the supervision or well-being of any student arriving on the Yale campus before 1:00pm on Arrival Day.

Travel By Plane
EXPLO will provide transportation from Bradley International Airport (near Hartford, CT) to the Yale campus for students whose flights are scheduled to arrive between 12:00pm and 5:00pm on Arrival Day. Students will be met at the baggage claim by EXPLO staff members wearing bright orange EXPLO Staff T-shirts.

Students whose flights are scheduled to arrive after 5:00pm, or at an airport other than Bradley, must arrange for private transportation to campus. We encourage families to book their students' transportation through our travel partner, Colpitts World Travel at 781.326.7800, ext. 460.

Instructions For Students Arriving at Bradley
Get off the plane, follow signs to the Baggage Claim area, and look for EXPLO staff in orange T-shirts. If arriving early, wait in the Baggage Claim area for EXPLO staff to arrive. Take our summer Main Office phone number with you and call us if there are any questions when arriving. We will be answering the phones, and our airport staff are in touch with us by cell phone. Our summer Main Office number is 203.432.1777.

Alternate Airport Locations
If arriving at Bradley International Airport in Hartford, CT presents unmanageable planning difficulties for your family, Colpitts can arrange service to and from JFK International Airport in New York City. Colpitts will work with another Exploration travel partner, BostonCoach, to arrange for pick-up at the airport and drop-off at the Yale University campus. Please note there will be additional fees for this service.

Travel By Train
Staff in orange EXPLO T-shirts will meet trains arriving between 1:00pm and 5:00pm at Union Station in New Haven. If you have any questions or concerns, please call our summer Main Office at 203.432.1777. Consult Amtrak at 1.800.USA.RAIL for train times and fares.

Residential Departure Day Information

On Departure Day, all students MUST be out of their rooms by 9:00am and off campus by 12:00 NOON.

Please schedule flights to leave between 8:00am and 1:00pm. Our buses will take students to Bradley International Airport in Hartford from approximately 6:00am to 12:00pm. If transportation is needed earlier than that, we will help your student arrange for alternate transportation, but we will not be able to accompany him/her.

Buses for the train station depart between 7:00am and 12:00pm. It is important that all students depart by 12:00pm, as our staff have to quickly ready the dorms for second session students (or to vacate the campus after second session). We are not able to supervise anyone on campus after 12:00pm.

* Note for Residential Students Attending Two Sessions:
On Saturday, July 21, 2012, first session residential students will be departing. New residential students will arrive the next day. Parents or friends may want to sign out six-week students on Saturday. Students leaving campus should be picked up by 12:00pm on Saturday and returned to the program on Sunday between the hours of 1:00pm and 5:00pm. Students should sign in and out at the Main Office since we will not have staff available on campus to be with students. We take all six-week students remaining on campus on an extended Saturday trip, featuring lunch, dinner, and evening entertainment. This allows us to clean and freshen the dorms for the next session’s students arriving the next day. Students who participate in our afternoon/evening trip on Saturday, July 21, will be charged between $80 - $110.

* Note for Students Attending Two Sessions on Different Campuses:
For 10th-grade students transitioning from EXPLO at Yale (First Session) to one of the EXPLO Focus programs at Wellesley College (Second Session), parents or friends can sign students out from Yale University on Saturday, July 21, and drop them off at Wellesley College after 1:00pm on Sunday, July 22. Alternatively, students can join the six-week students from their first session campus and meet students from their second session campus on the all-day field trip. Students transferring to their second session program will simply bring their luggage with them on the trip, and board the bus heading back to their second session program. On Saturday night, students will sleep on the campus of their second session program.

Day Student Arrival Information

Registration For Day Students
First Session Day Student Registration: Sunday, July 1, 2012
Second Session Day Student Registration: Sunday, July 22, 2012

We want you to get acclimated to EXPLO at Yale as quickly as possible. For that reason, we ask day students to come to registration on Arrival Day and familiarize yourselves with Yale's campus and students and staff at the program before the session (officially) begins.

On Arrival Day, you will also have a chance to meet with your Living Group, and review rules and procedures. There will be optional meetings for parents and guardians with the Dean of Students on Arrival Day. If students and families are coming in by train, there will be shuttles between 1:00 - 5:00pm to ferry you from Union Station to Yale's campus. Day students should plan on leaving campus at approximately 9:00pm on Arrival Day. For those traveling by train, another shuttle will bring students back to Union Station at 9:00pm.

For day students and families who are not able to make it to registration, there is also an opportunity to register on Monday morning at the normal arrival time.

Day Student Departure Information
