Courses + Academic Options
Each year, we design our courses with you in mind: subjects you'll want to take, taught in ways that will have you waking up ready to see what great new things will happen in class that day.
Collect evidence from a crime scene (Forensic Science), design your dream house (Architecture), or get your Glee on (Pop Music Choir). Battle Bots at the Thunderdome (Robotics), argue your case to victory (Mock Trial), or design and stitch this summer's hottest new dress (Intermediate Fashion Design).
No Grades (By Design)
At EXPLO, you have the chance to take courses in subjects you're interested in or passionate about — without worrying about how well you'll do or what grade you'll come home with at the end of session.
By eliminating grades altogether, we remove that fear of failure and provide the safe haven you need to immerse yourself in the subjects you love — or try out the ones you've always been curious about.
Courses
Students and instructors come to EXPLO because they're excited about learning. Unlike typical middle school curricula, EXPLO courses do not revolve around tests, homework, or formal evaluations. Instead, our courses are based on dynamic, hands-on activities and discussions. EXPLO courses and workshops are introductory in nature and provide you with an opportunity to develop and express your natural talents or explore new interests and skills in a pressure-free environment. Working closely with your instructors and fellow students, you will have a direct impact on how your class progresses and the direction your learning takes.
Each session, you'll be able to enroll in two courses. Many of our courses culminate in a final project or performance, but all of them engage students with interactive, innovative instruction every step of the way. You'll be amazed at what you will accomplish in just three weeks.
Workshops
After lunch, you'll embark on something altogether different: workshops that let you check out new interests and pick up out new skills. Hone your prowess with your favorite sport (Soccer, Tennis, Rugby) or try out a new one (Fencing, Yoga, Hip Hop Dance). Explore the worlds of engineering or design with workshops in Build It!: Projectile Pros, Interior Decorating, or Digital Photography. Or dive into the performing and visual arts with Improv Comedy, Stage Combat, or Graffiti Art.
You'll be able to take three week-long workshops per session. Because they're brief (only one week), workshops are a great opportunity to "dip into" something you've never tried before — whether that's juggling, kayaking, lacrosse, or Italian cooking.
